What is your hypothesis and what is your null hypothesis?

What are your variables? How are you measuring your variables? What is the level of measurement for each variable?

Fill out the table below. Remember, deviation is the score – mean.

Does the data collected so far support your hypothesis? Why or why not?

What are your threats to validity and limitations for this ‘study’?

Explanation / Answer

Note: This response is in UK English, please paste the response to MS Word and you should be able to spot discrepancies easily. You may elaborate the answer based on personal views or your classwork if necessary.

(Answer) What type of show (crime/law enforcement versus other) has the most acts of violence?

BBC’s ‘Sherlock’ is an adult crime show and NBC’s ‘The Office’ is an adult show without a crime theme.

In this illustration, ‘Sherlock’ has more themes of violence, law enforcement and crime than ‘The Office’.

Operationally define your terms (e.g. violence, crime/law enforcement show, non-law enforcement show).

Violence – 1 point

Crime – 1

Law enforcement – 1

Rule breaking/ anti-social activities – 1

Offensive or Explicit content (mild and harsh) – 1

Adult dialogue or themes - 1

What is your hypothesis and what is your null hypothesis?

Hypothesis – Crime shows and regular shows both have titillating content. However, crime shows with be higher up the scale than a regular adult show.

Null Hypothesis – The audience for both shows would classify both shows with a common PG rating.

What are your variables? How are you measuring your variables? What is the level of measurement for each variable?

IV – Types of content in the show as scored above

DV – Show ratings (Eg. G, PG, R etc.)

Measures – score points

Levels are based on score points.

Does the data collected so far support your hypothesis? Why or why not?

Yes it does – Both shows are equally engaging, have been popular and well received amongst the audience. This is despite crime being a theme in one show and drama being the theme of another show.

What are your threats to validity and limitations for this ‘study’?

Lack of a sample size population to conduct post-testing after screening the shows may hinder the scores of genuine audience opinion.
