Which one to three basic ethical theories is being illustrated?
Explain how decisions from a major moral principle perspective are developed in your scenario.
Explain how decisions might look from a biblical perspective.
John, a college student, has become involved in an animal rights group on campus. He feels that animals should no longer be used for food, clothing, medical research or entertainment. Visiting home for Thanksgiving, he refuses to eat the turkey and gets into a heated argument with his family. His father is furious, arguing that he worked for hours to cook the meal and the bird shouldn’t go to waste now. He demands that John eat some turkey, and says that actions like John’s are neither practical nor meaningful. How do you think John should respond?
Explanation / Answer
This scenario reminds me of deontological ethics or duty based ethics which suggests that one should fulfil one’s duty without worrying about the outcome. In this scenario, thanksgiving is the duty that should be observed by all the Christians by participating in the family dinner and eating turkey. This is a custom and practice that has been going on for centuries, so I think that John should obey his father because family is also more important. From a Christian standpoint, it’s mentioned in the scriptures that one should observe all the holidays without violating them. It’s a kind of mandate which requires one to consider it as one’s duty and fulfil it.
