I think, growth vs. fixed mindset perspective is an applicable and positive perspective, affecting ones enrichment. It makes sense to me and is therefore, not surprising. Mindset or beliefs about ourselves affects success and acheivement in life. Fixed-mindset is a conception about ones traits and abilities, being inherently fixed and unchanging. On the other hand, growth mindset is a conception about ones traits and abilities, being alterable, that is, it can be improved and developed.
I was erroneously fostering a fixed mindset in my own life. I thought that i was incapable of completing my master's degree, due to fixed belief about my memorizing capabilites. I thought that my memory was too poor to grasp and retain loads of information and pass semester examinations. I consequently thought of dropping the master's course. On my friends insistence, i kept on sitting for the semester examinations, keeping the decision to drop the course, aside. What i discovered was that i kept on passing the examinations with excellent grades, each time. So, my fixed or rigid mindset about my memorizing and retaining capabilities turned into growth mindset of thinking about growth, excellence and achievement via learning, hardwork and persistent effort.
Carol Dweck's theory about growth vs. fixed mindset can explain violence in schools. In schools, students are prone to bullying and peer pressure, which can make them stressful, anxious and aggressive. Their fixed belief that if they are percieved by friends as a bully or dumd, makes them a bully or dumb, hampers their growth. They start thinking that traits are unalterable and therefore they start feeling inferior and unintelligent about themselves.Such students thus develop a desire to take revenge aggresively or violently. A growth mindset, if developed in such students can help in making them feel positive about their qualities and aspects. It helps them in believing that they are changeable, which will help them to respond to bullying, social labels, etc with lesser reprisal.
