EPIDEMIOLOGY ASSIGNMENT:
MIDWESTERN TOWN, USA
Welcome to your new job! You have recently been hired in the health department of Midwestern Town, USA. Fortunately, you know the importance of having coalitions in your community, and have started one to look at the major health concerns in your area. The coalition wants to develop several programs to help with the most pressing health issues in the Midwestern Town. They will then be writing a grant to ask for these programs. Background data and statistics are needed to find out what pocket communities in Midwestern Town need certain types of programming. Your Chief Health Officer, of course, sits on the coalition and recommends her fine, new community health educator to dig up the necessary information. Midwestern Town is divided into three distinct areas: A, B, and C. While each individual area is relatively homogenous, significant differences exist between each area.
Being as bright as you are and having had HSC 317: Community Health, you say you will find the pertinent information in a short period of time. In this way, there will be suitable time for programs planning and grant writing.
The data for the three sections (A, B, and C) in Midwestern Town are as follows:
A
B
C
Population
80,100
32,600
65,500
Births

READ CAREFULLY!: Your first task is to calculate various rates for each pocket community. Each rate is to be calculated and rounded off to the nearest tenth. This means you carry each figure to the hundredth place and round back to the tenth place. You are to write in the formula you used to calculate your answers on the following page, next to each heading. In calculating, remember to use the proper base (1,000; 10,000; 100,000).
You want to do this job well, since you are trying to impress those in charge (even though they won’t remember your name until they need some peon thing done again….)
PART I. (Do not need to show work; only the formula used and answers.)
