What are the benefits and drawbacks to perceiving our own interpretation of reality?Explanation / Answer
Perception is a process of five sense organs.Perception involves selection ,organisation and interpretation of sensory stimuli.Perception starts with the awareness and recognition of different sensory stimuli.Five important process are involved in perception. They are attention, recognition, translation, behaviour and performance.
Factors
External factors
?Intensity-a stimulus is more likely to be perceived if it is more intense
size-a stimulus has more chance to perceive if it has a noticable size as it influence attention and recognition.
Contrast-contrast principle states that an external stimuli which project out against the background will receive attention.Example,a white letter on a red sign board.
Repetition-repeted stimuli seek more attention than a stimuli which is presented only once.
Motion-a changing object is attented more than a static object.
Novelty and Familiarity-a novel object in the familiar situation or a familiar object in anovel situation tents to attract attention.
Situations-a favourable work environment develops a positive attitude and work culture because the perception process is easily chanalised and rightly directed.
Internal factors
These factors include habit, motivation and interest, learning, organisational role and specialisation, socio- economic background and personality.
Perceptions are not always accurate representation of reality. Slight Inaccuracies of perception can occur, when a person is mistaken for someone else, or when an argument proceeds on the basis of false premises. These sometimes leads to false interpretation of reality called delusion which often occurs is psychological disorders. Our perceptions some times occurs in the form of illusions.Illusion is the false interpretation of physical reality. For example, a rope is peceived as a snake due to illusion. Both physical and cognitive process are involved in illusion. The best example for physical process in illusion are mirages. The illusion that occurs due to distortion of cognitive process involves
Horisontal vertical illusion- objects higer in our visual field are perceived as distant.
Ponzo illusion- line in distance always appears to be larger
Muller lyer illusion- the feather headed lines which is pointed outward appears to be larger than arrow headed lines.
Moon illusion-the moon looks bigger at horison.
In all the above cases we perceives reality in some distorted manner.
subjectivity is the major drawback for perception .Our subjective interpretation leads to distorted thought process such as prejudice, discrimination and steriotypical behaviours.
