Question

1. Your neighbors discover that you have studied developmental psychology, and so they come to you for advice about when to have their child begin school. Their child has a September birthday, and so they would likely be one of the youngest or oldest children in the class, depending on whether they started school next year or the year after. What would you want to know, and what advice would you give them from each of the following four points of view (choose one or however many you would like to help me with, please):

            a) development shaped primarily by nature

            b) development shaped primarily by nurture

            c) development as continuous

            d) development as discontinuous

Be sure to EXPLAIN your advice in such a way that it’s clear how it relates to the assumptions inherent in each of the four points of view.

Explanation / Answer

For giving any kind of advice would like to know; if there were some biological problems in the parent's genes to assure that nothing was wrong as far as inheritance i.e. nature was concerned. Hence satisfy the first option: a. development shaped primarily by nature. After this, I will enquire about the family set up and any social concerns that the family may have to satisfy the second option: b) development shaped primarily by nurture. Third I will ask; if the developmental milestones were normal for the child or they were delayed for confirming the third option: c) development as continuous. Lastly, I will ask about any distinct stages that the child had; to confirm the last option: d. development as discontinuous.

If everything appears normal based on all the four options I will advise the child to be sent to school otherwise not.
