Listening skills are important for communication for a person. There's a misconception when people think that communication skills involve only speaking, whereas a large and integral part of communication is listening, which is well beyond only the perception of words. It also includes understanding what the speaker wants to convey along with his intentions.

Poor listening skills have affected me at a number of places, especially in the management sector. While discussing a matter in the boardroom, I require to keep some patience. Since everyone has new ideas and everyone wants to convey their ideas, a rush in speaking does not help anyone. There was a situation in which me and my colleague had the same plan, and he was allowed to speak first. I ignored him completely as I was furious of not getting the initial chance to speak. And when it was my turn, as I went half way with my idea, I was asked to withdraw as most of the parts were similar to my colleague's. That embarrassed me.
