She had recently been appointed general manager of the Allstyles department store. It had ten departments selling wide range of products from men's and ladies' clothing to carpets, furniture and electrical goods. A local TV company had asked if they could film a typical working day for a programme they were making about different people's working lives. Rebecca agreed and the ten-minute programme used six different clips of film with Rebecca involved in the following activities: 1. Meeting with all departmental managers to explain the store's pricing and promotional strategy for the next 'End of season sale'. She told all managers to inform employees of the agreed price reductions and the way in which goods should be presented. 2. Attending a planning meeting with executives from head office to agree the 12-monthly sales targets for the store. Rebecca explained that the opening of a competitor's store nearby was a factor that should be taken into account. 3. Presenting three shop workers with 'Reach for the stars' badges for outstanding sales records over the last month. She had her picture taken with them for publication in the store's internal newspaper 4. Reviewing the poor performance of the electrical products division with the manager. 1. Rebecca is truly an all rounder. She could be seen formulating sales promotional tool to lure the customers into the department store and performing the managerial function of Directing by giving suitable guidelines to her subordinate managers. She also exercises the Planning function which is evident from para 2.She could also be seen rewarding outstanding emplyees for their contribution which will act as a morale booster to other employees too. She also plays the role of a mediator by settling the grievances of the two departmental managers. Apart from these she could be seen performing managerial functions of controlling, reporting and budgeting too.

2. She needs to be empathetic, diplomatic, patient, target oriented, hard working, energetic, enthusiastic, creative by nature, need of strong will power, confident, mentally strong and diplomatic. Moreover she needs to showcase strong leadership skills for the success of the organisation.

3. The employees may feel demotivated as they are not given any kind of incentives for the efforts put in, the store will see a rise in internl conflicts between the employees, a hike in absenteesm rate, high employee turnover, fallin company goodwill, inability to attain god employees as an afetmath of all these consequences, decrease in profits, inability to withstand competition due to non - formulation of strategic plans to withstand competiton, loss of value in the market, high resentment among the third paties etc would be the effects had Rebecca been ineffective.
