1. Write down what comes to mind when you hear the term "imperialism".

2. What were the economic reasons for imperialism?

3. What were the political reasons for imperialism?

4. Should a country expect another country to adopt new beliefs and customs that are not their own?

5. How did native leaders in colonies face choices in attempting to achieve independence? How was the struggle for independence also brought into larger world political struggles?

6. Was the New Imperialism more beneficial or more injurious overall to non-Western nations?

7. Why do you think little of these struggles for independence are taught in the US in K-12 schools?

8. The sources also discuss how economic imperialism may still exist. What difficulties do former colonies face economically in the global markets? Should all nations trade goods with the rest of the world? Think of the irony with China: originally they had little desire to trade with the western world for they saw nothing of value in western goods, now China is one of the world's major economic powers and again the west wants China to open up to buying more goods from the west.

Explanation / Answer

1) Imperialism is defined as the an action that involves a country which involves in extending its power by the acquisition of territories. It may also involve in the exploitation of these territories, an action that is related to expansion of colonialism. Colonialism is generally regarded as an expression of imperialism.

2) Imperial governments, private companies which under those governments, find ways to maximize profits. Economic expansion demanded cheap labor, access to or control of markets to sell or buy products, and natural resources such as precious land and metals; governments have met these demands by hook or by crook. After the starting of Industrial Revolution, dependent colonies provided to European industries and markets the raw materials they needed to manufacture products. Imperial merchants established trading posts and warehouses which created transportation infrastructure. Imperial powers also competed with each over for the best potential resources, markets, and trade.

3) Patriotism and growing imperial power declared countries to compete with others for supremacy. It’s a matter of national prestige, pride and security. Empires sought strategic territory to ensure access for their armies and navies all around the world present there. The empire must be defended and, better yet, expanded. Political motives were also triggered as responses and positive side to perceived threats to the security or prestige of the imperial power or its citizens abroad.
