Explanation / Answer
One event or development from the period 18501930 that could be used to explain the data shown in the chart is the fact that the racial and ethnic makeup of the American people was in flux due to the immigration of people from various parts of the world especially Mexico. So the demographics might have changed due to the Hispanic population.
A SECOND event or development from the period 18501930 that could be used to explain the data shown in the chart is the Great Depression that had begun, in 1930’s only a few had the means or incentive to come to the United States. Many immigrants returned so the ratios dropped.
The significance of this data shown in the chart to developments in U.S. society about 1850 through 1930 is the fact that it shows that America was considered a land of opportunity by the immigrants and if the immigrants saw that there was opportunity to grow and progress in the USA they came especially during the industrial revolution period but as the circumstances changed during great depression they stopped coming. Thus American development is linked to the successful settlement of immigrants as America is a true melting pot society.
