Question

In the imaginary town of Wigville, the dominant group consists of people with blond hair. People who don't have blond hair are thought to be less intelligent, lazier, and generally inferior to people with blond hair, and they experience both institutional and non-institutional discrimination. In school and on most standardized exams, Wigville citizens with blond hair tend to do better than Wigville citizens who don't have blond hair. Does this mean that Wigville citizens who don't have blond hair are, in fact, naturally less intelligent than Wigville citizens with blond hair? Based on your reading in Chapter 8, explain how at least one sociological theory or the results of at least one study supports your answer. In the southern United States during the first half of the 20th century, if African-American businesspeople began to be successful, their white competitors would often harass them, and would sometimes even kill them. Thus, discrimination helped some white businesspeople to eliminate their economic competitors. Which theory of prejudice do these incidents support? Why?
