Jimmy Paleo, M.A., is a research assistiant and PhD candidate for Dr. Sanchez, a well- respected professor who teaches doctoral-level research psychologists at an Ivy League university. Jimmy is pleased to have been selected from a large pool of applicants to work with Dr. Sanchez so he could complete his doctorate without incurring a large student debt.

One day, Dr. Sanchez calls Jimm7y into his office and tells Jimmy that he would like for him to assist another student, Amy, with conducting her datat analysis for her dissertation. Jimmy and Amy know each other fairly well since she regularly frequents Dr. Sanchez office at all hours, day and night. Jimmy is not impressed by Amy’s reseach abilities, and he wonders about the type of relationship she and Dr. Sanchez have.

Despite his concerns, Jimmy sits down with Amy to assist her with her data analysis. He discovers that her study has several methodological flaws. Jimmy discusses those flaws with Amy, who replies, “Dr. Sanchez said you’d fix all of the problems and conduct the data analysis along with writing the rest of the dissertation.

Explanation / Answer

1. Identify the potential ethical violations or issues in the scenario, and then provide a detailed rationale for why you identified one such violation or issue.

In this scenario, there is no fidelity with the way Dr Sanchez is treating his students. He is somehow favouring Amy too much making Jimmy complete all of her work. Dr. Sanchez only asked Jimmy to help her with data analysis, but as it turns out, he is carrying out all of her work from correcting methodological flaws to conducting data analysis and writing her dissertation.

2. Evaluate the potential consequences for the individual’s actions, using specific examples to support your claims.

In the given scenario, Jimmy has not been mentioned to show any protests or show any refusal of carrying out her work. Since it is very obvious from the given scenario, that Dr. Sanchez is favouring Amy, and if Jimmy somehow declines to carry out her work, there might be severe implications that could hamper his further PhD. Dr Sanchez doesn't seem to be carrying out and handling his students with too much justice and hence any refusalmay have severe implications.

3. Acknowledge a seemingly sensible rebuttal or counterargument to your position, and then assess its merits.Defend your position throughout your essay by intergrading a reasonable assessment of the ethical principles you considered in your evaluation of the case study (autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, justice, and fidelity).

In the given case scenario, there are many ethical principles that seem to have been violated. There is no respect for autonomy, as Jimmy cannot decide whether or not to carry out the assigned work that is out of his own research. Also, if Jimmy decides to disobey the orders, there are chances that Jimmy will be harmed, as Dr. Sanchez' attributes do not seem to be just, such that he would not favour any student or harm any student. Also, non maleficence is violated along with violation of beneficence. Justice is at stake in this case along with a huge question on Dr Sanchez fidelity.
