Introduction: Specific learning disabilities means a disorder in one or more basic psychological process involved in understanding or using language, spoken or written, which may manifest itself in an imperfect ability to listen , speak, read, spell or to do mathematical calculations. The term includes such conditions as perceptual handicap, brain injury, minimal brain dysfunction, dyslexia, and developmental aphasia. The term does not include children who learning problems which are primarily the result of visual, hearing or motor handicaps, or mental retardation, emotional disturbance or environmental , cultural, or economic disadvantages. (Federal Register, 1977,P.65083) (Karanth, 2002)
Children with special need pose a great challenge for the parents as well as teachers and care takers. These are not so lucky children suffer for no one's fault and more so does not have capacity to understand it.There are four types of basic learning disability.. Which are known as dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, dysprexia. It also includes communication disorders, motor skills disorders and specific learning disorders. The parents of such child initially difficult to accept the fact that there beloved child is not normal and has some special need.
Initial part of times goes in fault findings and reasoning about why this kid had to suffer this way. In majority of the cases there is no one clear cause and etiology is milt factorial. Till the time parents comes to terms with the child's condition, he might already have been neglected, cursed, not so cared, for even ridiculed for being that way.A lack of care and bonding is created that affects the overall growth of child. These learning disabled children have delay in attaining developmental milestones not only cognitive but also delayed motor, language, social and communication development. These all delays add up and affect the over all growth of child.
Learning at such a tender age itself is a daunting task which becomes more challenging and uphill task for these kids with intellectual disabilities..
I saw some children having learning disability at Shakti Learning Center .(Nagpur .Mahrashtra.India). Would like to share about one of them with dyscalculia, He used to find learning mathematics too challenging. He would not be able to understand basic concepts and would wonder how others could do that so easily without any help. That feelings would slowly make him avoid maths classes and create a sense of inferiority in him, that whatever he does, he will never be able to understand or perform maths as others did. The fear was so ingorged in him that once he even fainted when being scolded by teacher in class for not being able to answer some simple arithmetic questions. So one can just imagine what kind of trauma this intellectual disabled kids might be going through while growing.
