Chad is a 45-year-old man going back to school while working full time. A self-proclaimed procrastinator, his job as a computer programmer can handle his laid back style and ever-changing deadlines. In school, however, he is having difficulty turning his homework in on time. The teacher has told him that success is impossible if he does not turn his papers in on time, yet he fails to do so week after week.

The most applicable concept to this scenario is Avoidance Contigency.

Chad is a matured person as he is 45 years.He always had a delaying behavior in his job and kept on changing the deadline date,this is because there may be no threat with regard to the salary that he is getting,chad very knows that his late accomplishment of the task won't prevent his reinforcement (salary).On the other hand the environment at school is stricter than his environment at job,here he has to accomplish his task to get success in grades,hence,he is finding difficulty at school.The teacher here is using Avoidance Contigency concept by warning him that to avoid failure he has to turn his papers on time,still Chad continues to fail to turn his paper on time."A response becomes more frequent in the future if it has prevented an aversive condition of the past"(Mallot and Shane 2014).Here the teacher is trying to break the habit of procrastination of Chad by warning him to avoid failure in his grades by presenting the papers on time.Absence of such aversive condition in his job has lead to his procrastination behavior.
