Question
The questions is simple: "how many women and men from outside your "own circle" or your "culture" or "your own universe of reference" have you met during the past few month? how many of them have exchanged views, debated, or even worked at a common social, cultural, or political project? how many women and men have you met in the last month, or two or six months, with whom you have experienced cultural, religious, and social diversity, been positively questioned, and been compelled to reconsider your way of thinking, your certainties/uncertainties, and your habits as well as some of your prejudgments and prejudices? it is easy to think of oneself as "open-minded" in a universe peopled with always the same citizens and friends, and where openness is thought rather actually experienced. Mental ghettos are not mirages; they actually exist in palpable reality: being "open" inside one's mental intellectual ghetto does not open its door but simply allows one to harbor the illusion that there is no ghetto and no door. The most dangerous prisons are those with invisible bars".(Tariq Ramadan).
Explanation / Answer
In the past few months, I was lucky enough, to interact with people from diverse cultural backgrounds. I had an oppurtunity to work on a project with them. Though we had religious difference, but because of my upbringing, I have an open worldview and acceptance of people with diverse backgorund. Initally, there were resistance issues among them but later on, as I was open and accepting of their difference, the minor conflicts that we had in the beginning were resolved.
I think that accpetance of the other person as the person is easily said than done, a lot depends on the socialization of an individual. If the parents have taught their children well about the other cultures, their norms, and their differences in thinking, then children grow and develop into accepting and open individuals.
The Ecological theory given by Bronfenbrenner also focuses on the role of the ecology or culture in the overall development of the individual. If the parents teach children and are themselves open of the diversity, then the children gorw and developn into open an accepting individuals. This worldview is then reinforced by the experienes of an individual. Though, mental ghettos are not mirages, these are subject to change as and when an individual experiences something positive.
