Question

Majors are part of the way we see the world after our education is complete, it is the lenses by which we can view the world from our own perspective. Because of this, it is important to analyze different majors and their roots in psychology and its effect on their development over time. As Education is a nearly universal experience,it’sfair to say that there has been a heavy root of the reason in social psychology. Not only that, but both Psychology and Education have backgrounds in the human experience, and are there to help humans in their day to day lives and how they grow. This paper will explore the relationship between Psychology and Education and how both have been used to further human development over the years. As humans begin their development in early childhood, education is paramount to developing good behavior, shaping self-image, and detecting learning disorders.

One way we see psychology effecting the education system is in early development. While education and learning is something we do throughout our entire lives, it is especially crucial that we focus on the psychology and education of young children during their more formative years. The book defines learning as “the process of acquiring new and relatively enduring information and behaviors”, and also saying that it is how “we humans are able to adapt to our environments”. Because of this, we can use Education as a shining example of the learning hierarchy. On a behavioral level, in school we learn by a process known as operant conditioning, where we learn though a series of responses of reward and punishment according to how we want the student to behave. In school, this is used by teachers to show students how they are expected to act once they leave school and become adults, and as peers they condition each other into the generation that they will eventually be by encouraging certain behaviors and discouraging others. Therefore, we have generational differences, because the operant conditioning changes with each group of children that goes through school and into life.Education also is a part of shaping a child for the future. The book defines the concept of shaping as “operant condition procedure in which reinforcers guide behavior towards closer and closer approximations of the desired behavior”.

Another way that psychology is seen having an effect on education is through the testing and diagnosis of learning disorders in children. Many teachers use a process called “Response to Intervention” aka RTI, which can be used to identify when children are strugglingwith a subject and if it might be due to a learning disorder. Over the years, psychologist and educators have used this to determine if a child is showing symptoms of a learning disorder. Psychologists have assured that no one knows what causes early development learning disorders, but it helps that educators are meant to be on the lookout for them in their students. They look for signs of difficulty in reading, writing, math, and even memory and coordination. They also keep an eye on behavior in children, as this can sometimes be a sign of a learning disability or mental illness. If a student happens to be diagnosed with a learning disorder, school is a safe ground for educators to attempt teaching the child with different methods psychologists have developed for treating that child’s learning disorder. Not only that, but in some schools, they can provide accommodations for students with disabilities in order for them to learn at the same level as their peers. This, along with operant conditioning, are helpful to developing healthy and productive behaviors in kids who would otherwise fall through the cracks in the education system. Without psychology, there wouldn’t have been much, if any research into accommodating and treating learning disabilities in students. The National center for Education Statistics reported that in the school year of 2014, the number of children under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act was around 6.6 million, which is about 13% of the total public-school student population.

Explanation / Answer

This paper focuses on one thing very important; the psychology and education of; young children during their formative years, while our kids are very young we do focus on; the basic needs like; food, clothing, and education but we generally miss on the psychological growth of our kids. We can use the operant conditioning at home as well and thus use the carrots and stick policy to improve our child’s performance. The process of Response to Intervention” should be used at home as well to find out any learning disorder in the child. Thus now as an aware parent, I will work with the school to resolve psychological issues that my child have.
