Question
1) Participate in our Psych lab survey (must be 18+):
The Psychology Lab at Bellevue College is currently conducting a study with college students. This research study was developed to understand the experiences of college students regarding ethnic discrimination and social support and how it impacts their academic outcomes, stress, self-esteem, self-compassion, growth mindset, and grit. We are also interested in examining differences in emerging adulthood stages, racial, and gender differences on these outcomes.
Explanation / Answer
A research was coducted in a sample of 135 African American college students to find ethnic discrimination and social support . The aim of this study was to examine some models of the relations among perceived discrimination and social support. This study also aimed at examining the various indicators of psychological adjustment among the college students. The three competing models such as social buffering, social mobilization, and social support deterioration were tested within a regression framework. The buffering model, which predicted that social support would interact with perceived discrimination such that individuals with high levels of social support would be protected from the harmful effects of discrimination, was not supported. The social support mobilization model, which has predicted that support networks would support individual students exposed to discrimination, was also not supported. Support was obtained for the social support deterioration model, which predicted that social support is decreasing for those students who are exposed to discrimination. Racial discrimination was associated with lower perceptions of social support. It creates greater symptoms of depression, and lower levels of life satisfaction among students.
