When a leader has multiple team to work with one of the key issue is to develop a common mental model and vision. Teams from different departments are known to have different perspective, values, objectives, and standards, which get imbibed into their members due to their socialization into receptive departments. For example production department employees would value efficiency, speed, and quality of products; marketing want highest levels of customization of products according to customer requirements, human resource department would value maintenance of employees, employee satisfaction to avoid turnover, employee training and development etc.. Due to differences in perspectives and value of teams from different departments, they are often in conflict with each other and they find it difficult to work in harmony.

Leader’s major challenge is to reduce the conflict and maintain high level of coordination among these teams. One important skill the leader would need is to effective communication of common organization vision and framing his communications to each department in their terms.

Second important leadership skills is conflict management which in particular constitutes appropriate use of power and authority, negotiation, bargaining, extending concessions, and highlighting commonality of goals, creating obligations and person networks across the departments. All these skills will be helpful in different situations for the leader while managing coordination among teams from different functional departments.
