Explain how your personality might be explained based on those four theories. Identify how the theory does and does not apply to your person. Finally, develop your own explanation of personality development. You may use components of the various theories, but must include your own unique contributions. Use books and/or professional journals as reference material. In your conclusion include an explanation of whether or not the different theories contradict or support one another and how well they explain your personality

Question: Analyze your own behavior from the perspective of Freud, Jung, Alder, Horney, Murray, and erikson that we have discussed in this class. Explain how your personality might be explained based on those four theories

Answer: Let me take a few samples of my behaviours and connect with psychoanalytic theories.

Freud - I often view myself as highly moral person which in Freudian view would mean a strong superego and normal instincts (Id) especially sexual in nature drive my fantasies which if enacted behaviourally would not be acceptable and morally sanctioned. For example I often find myself lost in imaginations of beautiful colleague of mine who is married to someone else. This leads to my feelings of self-reproach and then I tend to rationalize by thinking that most people do that therefore am not alone. Am basically regularly using the defence mechanisms of rationalization escape the experience of painful conflict between my superego and id.

Carl Jung – Since childhood till today I have never seen any ghost but still I whenever I am in dark lonely place the fear of ghost grips me strongly. I tend to leave the place as soon as possible. The concept of archetype suggested by Carl Jung explains this that some primordial images are universal in human species that have developed from our evolutionally past and cannot be explained by experience in current life experience – unlike the hypothesis of human mind as ‘tabula rasa’.

Adler – Most of my professional behaviour moves me toward achievement of superiority which has been preceded by a deep sense of inferiority during me teen years – the focus being my physical weakness. The feeling of inferiority had been driving me towards what Adler called ‘strivign for superiority’.

Horney – Whenever am away from home for significant period I feel strong yearning to be with my family members because I feel the need for affection, love, and sharing experience. This is due to need for ‘moving towards people’.

Murray – I am always working upon writing a top quality research paper for getting publication in best journal. This is due to my psychogenic need for ambition and achievement.

Erikson – I am often driven by a deep desire to do something in my fraternity so that people with whom I interact should remember me with respect. For example, I try to exert best of my effort in teaching my students in expectation that they would remember me positively. Erikson’s concept of generativity explain this behaviour of mine.
