Question

earing sounds and listening to them is not the same thing. As you listen to music throughout this course, try to decide something about the following components:

The nature of melodies [Does the music seem to "sing"?]

The nature of the rhythm and its patterns [How does the music seem to move?]

Any changes volume levels (dynamics) [Does the music seem to intensify?]

The texture of the sound [Does there seem to be a recognizable texture to the music?]

Any important tone qualities (timbre) [Are there any particular instruments or voices that really help to enhance the sound?]

Any personal and/or emotional reactions to the music [Does the music move you by its expressive power or reflection?]

Always remember, listening perceptively is an active experience. It requires that listeners mentally participate in the process.

INSTRUCTIONS:

For this first Forum choose your favorite musical work or song (it can be of any style or genre).

Discuss the musical work briefly in terms of at least 3 of the bullet points listed above.

Your post must be at least 100 words in total.

Explanation / Answer

Hearing is sensory perception of sound, where we hear many sounds, noise, etc. This process is more of physiologic in nature and does not necessarily include giving attention and actively constructing the meaning. Example: Sound of motor vehicle, noise of bee, sound of wall clock, etc. Listening needs selective attention and process to construct the meaning to the sensory perception, this requires purposeful action and interest. Example: Listening to the lecture, listening to music and in turn trying to influence emotions.

The syntax of music consists of melody, harmony, tonality, rhythm, etc. Here music makes the perception to be not just sounds but a meaningful song, which depends on cognitive abilities, situational appraisal of the music. If the situational appraisal and music work hand-in-hand, then definitely music perceived as melody.

Timbre is tone quality, which makes the music vary in degree of ability to reach. When instruments combined to form the music, the tone quality can be changed by adding or removing particular instrument from composition. This sometimes makes a difference in tone quality, thus affecting the sound produced.

Appearance or induction of emotion is listeners of music depends on the aspects such as listeners association with the music, is it considered or perceived as positive/negative emotion, suggestibility of music composition in inducing emotion, etc. Cognition of music and elicitation of emotion have mutual dependence according to Jenefer Robinson (Robinson, Deeper than Reason, Oxford, 2005). If cognition is a process and emotion is a process, then it inter-dependent that how we perceive the music and elicit our emotion. Hence personal/emotional reaction to music is present while listening to music.
