The debate over the definition of forensic Psychology is due to the broadness of its application. In earlier days psychology had a very limited application. But now with the incorporation of forensics in psychology, the area has broadened that not only makes the psychologists important people who carry out the testimony and other witness credibility tests, but also are involved in the ethical and legal principles. Forensic psychology is known as the misunderstood beast as these psychologists are involved in a number of cases where the psychologists may be asked to profile the offender. These profiling is mostly accurate as they are based in the crime scene investigation. Here, it is important to understand that the psychologists who do the profiling are basically from an experimental background and help in identifying the offender, but not their correctional functioning. The corrections are performed by another psychologist as most of the psychologist have a particular area where they posses expertise and none of them are know all. Hugo munsterberg - a German American psychologist, who was reckoned for his work in applied psychology. His work in psychology started with his book- On the witness stand, which was quite controversial in his time. He explained how the facts given by the witnesses could be observed and studied through a psychological point of view. His research was not given much importance until recently. Three roles of forensic psychologists in a) competency to stand trial to ensure that the defendant has the ability to stand in the court room ; b) offering therapeutic services to the offender when there is a chance thatvcounselling might improve his condition. C) state of mind: to identify id the offender is in the most correct state of mind to be charged.
