Question
Define in your own words the concept of sampling error. Be sure that your definition includes the concepts of statistic and parameter. A researcher would like to evaluate the claim that large doses of vitamin C can help prevent the common cold. One group of participants is given a large dose of the vitamin (500 mg per day), and a second group is given a placebo (sugar pill). The researcher records the number of colds each individual experiences during the 3-month winter season. a. Identify the dependent variable for this study. b. Is the dependent variable discrete or continuous? c. What scale of measurement (nominal, ordinal, or interval/ratio) is used to measure the dependent variable? d. What is the independent variable? e. What research method is being used (experimental or correlational? For the following set of scores (9, 1, 1, 1), find the value of each expression: a. sigma X^2 b. (sigma X)^2 c. sigma (X - 3)Explanation / Answer
The dependent variable; that is measured or observed in this study is the occurrence of cold. The dependable variable is discrete i.e. the no of cold episodes during the experiment. The scale of measurement will be a ratio scale showing the amount of cold’; the experimental subjects have. The independent variable is the one which we can change i.e. the dose of the vitamin C. The research methods that is being used is experimental as we as actually conducting experiments and finding a causal relationship between the level of vitamin C and occurrence of cold.
