16 Discussion Question 3 (150-300 words) Patient Involvement in Health Care Improvement The call for active patient involvement in CQl activities is in line with changes to the traditional patient clinician relationship that have occurred over several decades. Rather than be passive, unquestioning recipients of medical care, patients have demanded, and have even been encouraged to become active partners in both their health and they health care. What are the pros and cons of active patient involvement, and support your response.

MEANING OF ACTIVE PATIENT INVOLVEMENT -

At times doctors promote shared decision making, in which the patient is involved to express their views and participate in their health care. Sometimes doctors also think that it is harmful to provide full information regarding the patient's health as it may put a different impact on patient's mental and physical health. Such involvement is known as Active patient involvement.

But like every other thing this also has pros and cons, Few of them are discussed here -

PROS OF ACTIVE PATIENT INVOLVEMENT -

1. Patient Knowledge -

Active participation of patients is very beneficial because it helps in making prompt participation in decision making. If the patient is not aware of any procedure it's better to get the right information rather than being completely zoned out of the health issues.

2. Appreciation of the patient's right to play an active role in decision making -

It is the responsibility of the patient to actively participate in the decisions involving their health. It's the job of the doctor to discuss clearly about all those side effects and risks happening but it's the patient job to understand what the doctor is saying.

3. Awareness of choice -

To be an active participant the patient must first understand the uncertainty of medicine. Sometimes the patient are strong enough to understand their health issues and there are times when the patient relies on the doctor for decision making. But in any of the two conditions, the patient has to be aware of the decision and the reason behind it.

4.Explict encouragement of patient's participation by physician -

The patient should be allowed to ask questions in order to have an active participation. There has to be a back and forth conversation between the two, The more comfortable doctor is the more they'll be able to find about the options.

CONS OF ACTIVE PATIENT INVOLVEMENT -

1. Most of the patients do not want to participate in the decision making, for them, revealing the uncertainties

inherent could be harmful.

2. For some patients it's not feasible to provide complete information about the potential risk, as they might not be strong enough to understand things completely.
