Question

you thoughts on this discussion A 12-year-old girl lives outside the city limits on a farm. She wants to play on a youth soccer team, but a youngster has to be a resident of the city to play in the city league, and there aren't any teams in the surrounding rural area. Her mother decides to lie about the girl’s address; the mother tells the soccer league that the girl lives inside the city at her uncle's house. The girl is delighted to play on a city soccer team, even though the team wins only three games all season. You score the winning run for your high school baseball team, but you know that when you rounded third, your foot missed the base. The official didn't see it, so you decide to keep quiet about it. In the locker room after the game, your coach tells you that you did the right thing by not admitting you missed the base. You like to work out on a treadmill at the new cardio fitness center on campus, and ideal workouts for you are at least 45 minutes long. You are in the cardio center almost every day, and you usually arrive just before the place gets really busy after work. There is a 30-minute limit on machines when people are waiting, but you want your workout to be longer, so you get a friend who doesn't like the treadmill to sign up for an extra 30 minutes right after you, and then you use her time for yourself.

Explanation / Answer

Question 1: A 12-year-old girl lives outside the city limits on a farm.

In the given case scenario, the girl wants to to play in the soccer team and is eligible enough to get selected, but cannot play since she is not a citizen of the city itself. Her aunt lies so that she can clear that criteria. If a small lie does good for someone, and does not harm anyone, then there's no harm in putting up a small lie. Hence, there's no issue that the aunt lied, rather when the coach realises later that she is worth and gets to know her address reality, he might not want to expel her from the team.

Question 2: You score the winning run for your high school baseball team, but you know that when you rounded third, your foot missed the base. The official didn't see it, so you decide to keep quiet about it. In the locker room after the game, your coach tells you that you did the right thing by not admitting you missed the base.

There are game ethics that need to be followed, and in this case there is a whole team that would lose in lieu of this lie. Hence, it would have been fair if the player would have told the official so that the other team would benefit from that. Since this lie has harmed the other team, it is a lie that shouldn't have been made.

Question 3: You like to work out on a treadmill at the new cardio fitness center on campus, and ideal workouts for you are at least 45 minutes long.

This is another question where moral dilemma applies. Though I am trying to steal 15 extra minutes for my workout, I'm not doing any harm to anyone else. My friend is not interested in the treadmill and hence I'm using his time. This is benefiting the gym people as they are getting another customer, as well as benefiting me since I'm using my required 15 minutes.
