Criminal Justica -Short Writing
The Obama administration recently announced that it will relax the enforcement of federal marijuana laws. The shift was influenced, in part, by the legalization of the recreational use of marijuana in Colorado and Washington State, as well as the confusion surrounding discrepancies between federal and state laws. Although marijuana use is still considered illegal under federal law, the Department of Justice announced that it will not prosecute marijuana users if the state prevents the distribution of marijuana to minors, drug revenue from going to criminals, and illegal trafficking across state lines.
The laws surrounding drug use are changing in many states, with medical marijuana now legally available in 20 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. Although the "war on drugs" typically involves the extensive efforts by all levels to government in enforcing drug policies and punishing offenders, the legalized sale of marijuana is creating revenue opportunities for state officials through the collection of sales tax that is projected to exceed $100 million per year.
