When a stressful event occurs, there is an increase in the heart rate, due to higher pounding. There is an increase In muscle tension and appearance of beads.
This response is known as flight or fight response. The flight or fight response is a survival mechanism, that enable the humans to enact in these life threatening situations. When a stress stimuli is confronted, the amygdala would interpret sound and images and would end a signal of distress to hypothalamus. The hypothalamus communicates with the body via the autonomic nervous system. The autonomic nervous system controls involuntary functions like breathing, heartbeat, blood pressure, as well as dilation and constriction. The sympathetic as well as parasympathetic nervous system work simultaneously. The flight and fight response is stimulated by the nervous system whereas rest and digest after the sympathetic nervous system excites the senses.
The signals go from the sympathetic nervous system to the autonomic nervous from adrenal glands. The epinephrine is pumped into the bloodstream. As adrenaline/epinephrine moves in the body, it arises physiological changes such as pushing blood in muscles, faster heart beat, increase in blood pressure and pulse rate. Extra oxygen goes in the brain with an increase in alertness. Sight and other basic senses become sharp than usual and nutrients are pumped into blood stream.
After epinephrine, the second stress response is activated through the HPA axis. The CRH is released, relieving the adrenocorticotrpic hormone, keeping the body high. As stress lowers, cortisol falls, lowering stress response.
