Question
Perched high atop a granite cliff overlooking the rugged Big Sur coastline sits Pacific’s Edge Restaurant, where migrating whales may be seen from every table in the dining room. Sunsets here are so spectacular that the entire dining room often breaks out it spontaneous applause. You truly enjoy working in this magical Big Sur resorts setting --- except for one thing. You have occasionally been “stiffed” by a patron who left no tip. You know your service is excellent but some customers just don’t get it they seem to think that tips are optional, a sign of appreciation for servers however tips are 80 percent of their income.
In recent New York Times article you learned that some restaurants such as the famous coach house restaurant in New York automatically add a 151 percent tips to the bill in Santa Monica the Lula restaurant prints “gratuity guidelines on checks showing customers what 15 or 20 percent tips would be you also know that American express recently developed a gratuity calculation feature on tis terminals this means that diners don’t even have to do the math.
Your task . Because they know you are studying business communication your fellow servers have asked you to write a serious letter to Constantine Delmonico, General Manager, Big Sur Properties 48130 California Highway 1, and Big Sur CA 93920. They think a letter will be more effective than a conversation. Persuade him to adopt mandatory tipping guidelines in the resturentent .. READ THE PROBLEM CAREFULLY AND WRITE A PERSUASIVE LETTER UTILIZING THE PERSUASIVE STRATEGY. FORMATE THE ASSIGNMENT AS A BUSINESS LETTER. BE SURE TO SUE PROPER BUSINESS LETTER FORMAT.

Mr. Constantine Delmonico,
Genreal Manager,
Big Sur properties,
48130 California Highway 1,
Bug Sur, CA 93920
Dear Mr.Delmonico,
I am writing this letter to bring to your attention a serious concern among our waiting staff at the Pacific’s Edge Restaurant. There are multiple occasions even when we, waiting staff, have provided good service, some customers left no tip to us.
Basis discussion among the fellow servers, we have few possible solutions to bring to your attention, which shall solve this issue so critical to us. We waiting staff believe a suggested tip printed on checks will work well here at Pacific’s Edge restaurant. By printing a suggested tip on the check, patrons will be reminded to tip commensurate with the good service enjoyed and good time they had at our restaurant, and will ease them of doing math. This practice is already being followed at some restaurants like Lula restaurant in Santa Monica. With the diverse set of customers, our restaurant attracts, tourists from Europe or Asia might not be aware of tipping system and how 80% of our income is formed by tips. Thus, tipping suggestions will be helpful for these tourists when paying. Apart from tipping guidelines printed on checks, few other restaurants like Coach House restaurant is automatically adding a 15% tip to the bill.
It hits our morale when we are “stiffed” out of tips, even when we know service provided by is excellent. We truly enjoy working in this beautiful Big Sur resort setting, but not being tipped despite the excellent service provided is a serious concern for us, when 80% of our income is dependent on tips. Considering these we strongly urge you to take immediate steps on including tipping guidelines to the checks.
Sincerely,
(Name of waiter)
