Question

1. List five acts that were once considered deviant but are now considered acceptable or even courageous. Have you ever committed a deviant act because you believed it was the moral thing to do? If yes, please explain why. If not, in what sort of situation might you consider carrying out a deviant act?

2. Have you ever been labeled deviant? Why or why not? How does your social class, level of education, gender, race or ethnicity, and nation of origin impact the chances you will be considered deviant in your country?

3. Which of the following theories of deviance described in the chapter—rational choice, differential association, labeling theory, anomie and social disorganization, strain theory, and conflict theory—best explain the recent increase in cheating among college students? Why?

Explanation / Answer

Acts that were considered deviant in earlier times are listed out as follows:

1. Sharing scientific ideas that challenged the Chuch’s notion of the universe.

2. Criticism of the dictator/ruler/governance.

3. Premarital sex.

4. Presence of women in the public sphere.

5. Having a child out of a wedlock.

Although many of the acts today are not considered deviant in Western society standards, underdeveloped countries in the East have much more progress to make in this regard. I cannot cite a personal example of a deviant behaviour that I considered moral, however I would like to state an example of a so called deviant behaviour that I would not stop myself from carrying out. Marrying outside one’s community is a taboo in many societies across the world (including mine). Forceful marriage to abide by the ‘norms’ is something that needs to be radically challenged and uprooted. I would defy such a convention because it is limits my freedom of choice as a human being.
