Question

One of the measurements that can be used to determine a child’s developmental progression is to compare the child to the typical developmental milestones. Some examples of developmental milestones are when an infant first sits up, crawls, and walks. There are also developmental milestones for communication, emotional, and social development. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) provides some extensive information on developmental milestones for infants and young children.

Why is understanding a child’s developmental milestones so important, especially communication, social, and emotional development?

Explanation / Answer

Developmental Milestones are the basic criterion process that is set forth by childhood experts as a way to understand a child’s growth. There are 4 basic areas in which growth of a child is assessed namely, cognitive development, language development, emotional development and motor skills development. If a child is fulfilling the criteria and behaving normally in each area they are considered to be on target as compared with other children’s of the same age. If a child is not able to show the certain markers in any particular domain, then this thing would be something early childhood experts, and from this information, activities, skills, and ideas are provided to a child’s family to encourage their child’s opportunities for growth. Even after this if the child continues to miss the milestones than early intervention may be needed to help a child to increase his/her development with not only their parents help but through the extra support of experts. It important to understand   Developmental Milestones of a child since it assures the parents that they are providing the skills, information, and ideas needed to raise a happy, healthy, well-adjusted child. Furthermore, it helps to identify those children’s that are not able to fulfill these criteria’s so that extra support could be provided to them to achieve these milestones. It is also very important to know about these milestones since if they are missed it may be very hard for them to learn them in future and further leads to much behavioral disability such as autism, mental retardation, or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). In addition, many children may have delays in language or other areas.
