Question

Mrs. Hairston teaches a class of 21 students ranging in age from 4 – 6 years old. This year she has a rowdy bunch so she spends much of the day redirecting children and separating the “trouble-makers.” It seemed like most of the children were ready for Kindergarten, so she jumped right into the Standard Course of Study. When she does hands-on activities, the classroom gets out of control, so the children spend most of the day in their seats. She wants to make sure all the children are reading by the end of Kindergarten so her primary focus is literacy. She has several students with special needs but she prides herself in treating all of her students the same and makes a point of letting the children know that “those” students just need to work harder and they can be just as smart as everyone else. She teaches everyone the same thing, the same way to avoid showing favoritism. Several parents have offered to help out in the classroom but Mrs. Hairston takes her job seriously and lets parents know their job is to help their children with homework.

Explanation / Answer

Inappropriate practice reason: without any assessment about their behaviour and their daily activities preschool. without a clear assessment of a child, it can difficult to understand the needs of any child. Maybe that’s why Mrs. Hairston is spending most of the day redirecting children and separating the troublemakers and facing further problems due to issue such as- Students spend most of their time on their seats and is affecting the 4-6 year old in physical as well as psychological development.

2. Treating children with special needs and other children equally.

Inappropriate practice reason: The terms special needs speak for itself meaning extra support or need to be required, unarguably if anyone requires a special support then they deserve it and treating everyone equally could hinder the developmental need of children in learning a helping attitude toward others especially with others with special need.

3. Several parents approached to help out in the class.

Inappropriate practice reason: In spite parents displaying a helping hand to Mrs Hairston she not only keeps away parents from participating in the classroom but also sending a wrong message to parents about their relationship with their child is folded to homework.
