Question
Leni Riefenstahl made the film Triumph of the Will as a propaganda tool for the Nazi party during the Nuremberg Rally of 1934. Although Riefenstahl denied any wrongdoing, it is said that the film served as an important tool of propaganda for Hitler. It was screened throughout Germany in the years prior to WWII. However, it has also been described as more of an art film, with dramatic scenes and sweeping views of the rally, and Riefenstahl won a medal for artistry at the World Exposition in Paris in 1937, the same exposition that had Picasso’s Guernica.
When is a film a weapon of propaganda, and when is it just simply a visual epic? Should Riefenstahl be held accountable for her actions in using Nazi propaganda?
Explanation / Answer
the film becomes a weapon for propaganda when the thoughts, views, circumstances in the film are not what according to what has happned in the reality. the director or writer whoever wants to patray a strong message may twist the reality in the movie as they wish to. such films will alwys have a strong message and may be more biased to only one side of the reality. when the film wishses to communicate its message via strong visual scenes, the film may simply be a visual epic. there may not be any biased twists in reality nor the reality may be presented as it is. secondly, the film may end on a note forcing the audiance to make a choice oif their own rtaher than placing a seed of thought by propoagation. Yes, according to me Riefenstahi should be held accountable for her actions as there was a use of dramatic scenes in order to propogate Hitler's view points. she may have seem to use the reality to demonstrate her version of reality by justifying Hitler's rage towards jews.
