Explain the American philosophy of imprisioment and how this affects the U.S. criminal justice system
The American philosophy of prison states that in order to inflict punishment on the people who are doing wrong, imprisonment plays an important role. Prison is described as one of the most complex of the forms of punishment. Prison is known to affect the materialistic possessions of the prisoner, as he cannot earn and neither will they have a job or a proper livelihood and their entire lifetime earnings are affected. The philosophy of imprisonment is that it is one of the most severe forms of punishment because the person loses his freedom and his life is not in his control anymore. Prison also severely affects the person by affecting him psychologically with the negative environment around or physical harm by action of the inmates or the correctional officers. The philosophers say that imprisonment acts by acting on the soul, the heart as well as the inclinations of the prisoner.
The US justice system is very much influenced by this philosophy as it completely believed in imposing criminal penalties to anyone who is violating these laws and believes in mitigation of crimes. Rehabilitation is imposed on people who might have served their time in prison . The policies of US criminal justice system are driven by the President's Commission on Law Enforcement and Administration of Justice, of the year 1967.
