Question
Add-ons Help All changes saved in Drive CD Arial Psychology You have been asked to create an experimental design to test the hypothesis that texting while driving interferes with driving skills. Explain why variables that can affect the data collected from the experiment should be monitored and held constant when testing this hypothesis. How should participants be assigned to conditions? How can the researchers design the experiment so that the only difference between both conditions is texting?Explanation / Answer
Texting while driving interferes with driving skills.
It is important that the data that has to be collected should be consistent and reproducible. And in order to have that data, conditions have to be consistent. This consistency can only be achieved if every condition is kept same, in the case of both control and experimental setup. To attain this, it is not possible to carry out the experiment in real life conditions, as the traffic conditions cannot be kept same every time.
Hence, a two lane track with drivers, coming in at a constant speed have to be set up, amongst which subjects, with texting and without texting have to be set up. There should 2-3 subjects, or more, and the same texts have to be given to each subjects, in the experimental group. Also, texts can be kept at different levels, such as jokes, and influence of jokes on driving, or some emotional message from a closed one.
Meanwhile, the drivers have to be kept at a constant speed such that every time the set up is replicated, the conditions of traffic would be same.
