Explanation / Answer

Development of modern day societies is the result of development of structure within the society. Modern day formal organizations are necessary for the proper and effective functioning of the societies. During the rapid growth of globalization, urbanization and growth of the global village, the economy of the world has changed tremendously. In this modern world, there has been a significant shift in bureaucratic functioning.

The term bureaucracy was first coined and introduced by Max Weber. In his essays, he has focused on the organized, coherent and honest functioning of bureaucratic organizations. In modern societies, bureaucracy is a key feature as it encourages logical perspective to manage and formalize the various procedures of organizational functioning. It helps in creating a hierarchy of organizational functioning which acts as a checks and balances on the whimsical functioning of the top leaders.

In his book ‘McDonaldization of Society’ Ritzer gave a different perspective to bureaucracy. He conceptualized ‘McDonaldization as a re-conceptualization of rationalization, or moving from traditional to rational modes of thought, and scientific management’. Rationalization refers to the substitution of traditions, values, and emotions as motivators for behavior in society with rational, logical and well-thought, calculated motivators. Ritzer gave a new perspective to the model of bureaucracy put forth by the food giant McDonalds which is a more contemporary representative of bureaucratic functioning. Ritzer said that the functioning of McDonalds is more effective, with well calculated risks, predictable and controlled in the modern day world. Efficiency has been conceptualized as delivering the products to the customers in the minimum possible time. The second, calculability, refers to the quantifiable objectives of fast-food chains, seeing quantity as quality. Based on their prior experiences, customers predict the same services to be provided by McDonalds each time they order food or want to avail services. By control Ritzer says that employees become standardized and replaced by non-human technologies.

Overall, it may be concluded that Weber put forth the concept of bureaucracy which Ritzer took forth and very succinctly talks about its role in modern day organizations.
