Question

1. Walt is trying to teach Jesse his blue candy recipe. As part of the recipe, Jesse needs to learn to turn off the heat when the candy syrup gets too hot. Walt decides to use a temperature thermometer that makes a beeping sound when a temperature is reached to condition Jesse to turn off the heat. However, Jesse is having a hard time making the association.

a. Explain what Walt can do to improve how Jesse learns.

b. Gus is Walt and Jesse’s competitor in the candy making business and wants to slow down their production.

c. What 3 techniques can Gus use to decrease the saliency of the thermometer’s beep. Explain each of the 3 techniques.

d. Design an experiment to test the effectiveness of temporal contiguity, contingency of the CS and US, and fear versus non-fear related US. Visualize your hypothesized data for the outcome of your experiment.

Question: Walt is trying to teach Jesse his blue candy recipe.

Answer: To develop a better associated between stimulus and action to be learnt a few things that Walt can do are

Increase the salience of stimulus – the volume of beep sound may increase, Walt ay even think of adding the light blinking along with beep sound if possible. This would grasp Jesse attention to thermometer.

Second thing Walt can do is to provide a few more practice sessions to Jesse by demonstration. Help Jesse to practice turning of heat for more number of times upon receiving the signals of thermometer. More practice would lead to better association.

In case Jesse still finds it hard then Walt can think of adding another level of feedback to increase his association. Here Walt can make a condition for Jessy that if he misses turning of the heat Jesse will have consume the overcooked candy himself. However, if Jesse turns off thermometer at right time then he may get to taste the samples of well-prepared tasty candy.
