Explanation / Answer

Answer-3- David Rigler was the scientist incharge of studying Genie's language development. Graduate student Susan Curtiss and psychologists James Kent also helped him in improving her language skills.Genie scored the level of one year old when she was assessed at initial stage. But soon she began to add words to her dictionary. She was able to learn single words and added two words together as the younger kids do. Curtiss realised that Genie is capable to acquire language.

Genie's case was not so simple, she lived with Rigler family for atleast four years. First she misbehaved but later within a few weeks, she settled down and started listening to music, went to speech therapy, studied sign language. David received a grant from National institute of mental health to treat Genie. Rigler sacrificed his own family life in providing for Genie.Susan Curtiss observed Genie daily. She started teaching Genie General American English and she gradually started learning it. She involved Genie in other activities of daily life and Genie started learning and enjoying these activities gradually.

Answer-4- Genie acquired some patterns of language at first stage as young children. But her linguistic development was quite different from them. Her vocabulary, the speed, words she learned were very different from others. She had difficulty in utilizing grammar. She understood some aspects of grammar but was not able to use them in her language.Researchers found that she used abnormal expressive language because of the difficulties she forced while learning speech. It was observed by the psychotherapists that Genie developed non verbal communication skills and is able to utilize different methods of non verbal communication. On the basis of her non verbal communication skills, therapists decided to teach her sign language.

Answer-5- When scientists evaluated Genie, they found that she had normal capacity of perception. Some of her cognitive abilities were not developed but these were considered as inborn. Genie learned to walk, she learnt how to use the toilet but she was unable to learn the language skills like other kids. She also showed emotions and interaction with others but those were not normal. A lot training was given to Genie regarding language but she could not develop language skills. There were conflicts among scientists regarding Genie's care. The case study ended when the National Institute of Mental Health withdrew the fundings.

Answer-6- According to the sources Genie is alive and residing somewhere in Los Angeles. ABC news claimed that Genie is living happily in a private place for mentally challenged adults. She was not good in speaking but still she uses sign language to communicate. Journalist Rory Carroll published that her brother died in 2011. He also mentioned about Susan Curtiss, after putting lot of efforts she was not able to contact Genie.
