Question

Erica just had her annual review at work and her boss told her that she is up for a promotion. The new job is something that she always wanted and the salary is significantly higher than what she is currently making. The job involves traveling approximately two weeks out of every month. Erica's children are in many different school and social activities and her husband, Darin, works a full-time job. Erica has two weeks to make her decision about taking the promotion. Using the biopsychosocial model, how might Erica demonstrate adaptive behaviors in the next two weeks while she is making her decision? Identify ways in which Erica can approach decision-making in a healthy fashion. How will Erica spend her time in the next two weeks? What are healthy behaviors and what are maladaptive behaviors that Erica might show?

Explanation / Answer

Erica with her promotion up for grabs would be happy to share the news with Darin and kids. Explaning them about the new job responsibilities and requirements and the support that she requires from them. She will take opinion from Darin about taking the promotion and informing him about the 2 weeks time period for making the decision.

While making her decision erica will try to make balance in the family and professional life. Adaptive behavior is a type of behaviour in order to adjust the another type of behaviour or situation. In this case erica will try to have idea of how she can maintain the regular home activities with kids and her job responsibilities. She will have a more adverse effect on the daily activities as the pressure of making a decision will be in her mind all the time.

The decision maker's environment can play a part in the decision-making process in this case darin and kids and their support to erica in her professional life. Following are some of the approach that erica can take for final decision making.

1. Objective of the process must be established first.

2. Promotion and staying away for two weeks must be classified and placed in order of importance.

3.  Alternatives must be evaluated against all the objectives like darin helping out kids while erica is away.

4. Decision actions are necesssary to keep away all the problems.

Considering erica has accepted the offer of promotion she will spend her time with the family and try to arrange all the things for the kids and husband. With more responsibilities on her sholuders at home and ay work she will try to balance both.

Healthy behaviours such as spending more time with family. Understanding their role and opinions in her decision and explaining them about the result of her decision. Maladaptive behaviour such as stress, anxiety, anger and frustration can be seen in erica as she will away from family for 2 weeks in a month. She will be constantly thinking of her decision weather it is right or wrong.

In the end erica is was waiting for this opportunity in her career for long period of time and would not like to miss the same. with help of support of family and friends will be able to maintian the balance between work and home.
