Use the personality theory assigned to your group to explain the student’s personality disposition. Additionally, explain three assessment methods that could be used to get a better understanding of the student’s personality. Be sure to provide a brief description of the theory before applying it to the case.
Group III The big five model of personality
Explanation / Answer
According to the big five model of personality the student obviously falls in the category of introversion trait which is another extreme of extraversion. Extraversion represents a continuum between extreme extraversion and extreme introversion. This student shows low degree of extraversion which indicated his/her shy personality. Personality disposition of someone who is an introvert indicates that, that person does not enjoys being the focus of attention that is why the student was terrified to be selected to dance in front of other students. Even a small group of people makes introvert people nervous since they are not outgoing enough to communicate confidently with anyone. Introverts prefer solitude, they feel exhausted when they have to socialize a lot, find it difficult to start conversations, dislike making small talk and carefully think things through before they speak. They lack public speaking skills and therefore also avoid taking up jobs sometimes that require them to face people. Other personality assessment methods that are used to assess the personality of an individual include Myers-Briggs Type indicator. This test is based on Carl Jung's theory of personality which proposed two dichotomous pairs of cognitive functions: The "rational" (judging) functions: thinking and feeling. The "irrational" (perceiving) functions: sensation and intuition. For Jung, there are two contrasting attitudes- extroversion and introversion. MBTI is based on this theory that measures individuals across four bi-polar dimensions i,e Attitudes which includes Extraversion-Introversion,this measures whether someone is “outward-turning” and action-oriented or “inward turning” and thought-oriented. Perceiving function which includes Sensing- Intuition,This measures whether someone understands and interprets new information using their five senses or intuition. Judging function: Thinking-Feeling. This measures whether one tends to make decisions based on rational thought or empathic feeling. Lifestyle preferences: Judging-Perceiving. This measures whether a person relates to the outside world primarily using their judging function which is either thinking or feeling or their perceiving function which is either sensing or intuition. This theory applies to the student as well, who is an introverted personality which indicates that he/she is more thought oriented and less likely to perform confidently in front of other students. The revised version of Neo-PI is also based upon the simliar theory of the Big 5 personality types. This test can also be used to to assess the personality. The 16 PF (personality factor) inventory measures personality according to Cattell’s 16 factor theory of personality. It can also be used by psychologists as a clinical instrument to help diagnose psychiatric disorders and help with prognosis and therapy planning. It can also be used for career and occupational selection. 16 PF also uses Big 5 theory of personality as the basis but Cattell by identifying 16 traits or primary factors clubs them into 5 main global factors of which one is Extraversion global factor that also helps to explain the introverted personality of the student. According to Cattell's Extraversion global factor, the primary factors or traits included are general social participation, people oriented and seeking out relationships. An individual scoring low on this indicates introversion that means the person is socially inhibited just like the student mentioned in this case.
