Explanation / Answer

Autism is complex neurobehavioral condition or disability; the way individual relates to his / her environment and interaction with other people. The word spectrum describes the range of difficulties people experience and degree to which affect people. There are 3 main areas of difficulties;

Experts are still uncertain about all the causes of autism. In all likelihood, there are multiple causes – rather than just one. It appears to be that a number of different circumstances — including environmental, biologic, and genetic factors – set the stage for autism and make a child more likely to have the disorder.

There is a reason to believe that genes play a major role in the development of autism. It has been found that identical twins are more likely to both be affected than twins who are fraternal (not genetically identical). In a family with one autistic child, the chance of having another child with autism is about 5 percent – or one in 20 – much higher than in the normal population. Chances are higher when it’s the same gender.

At least one group of researchers has found a link between an abnormal gene and autism. The gene may be just one of three to five or more genes that interact in some way to cause the condition. Scientists suspect that a faulty gene or genes might make a person more likely to develop autism when there are also other factors present, such as a chemical imbalance, viruses or chemicals, or a lack of oxygen at birth.

In a few cases, the autistic behaviour is caused by:

Treatment for autism is usually a very intensive, comprehensive undertaking that involves the child’s entire family and a team of professionals. Some programs may take place in your home. These may be based in your home with professional specialists and trained therapists or may include training for you to serve as a therapist for your child under the supervision of a professional. Some programs are delivered in a specialized centre, classroom or preschool. It is not unusual for a family to choose to combine more than one treatment method. Examples of these treatments are Speech & Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, or the care of a Neurologist or Gastroenterologist.

The Lovaas Program is based on the principle of applied behaviour analysis. The Lovaas Program is used for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). It’s a technique at the focus on breaking complex tasks into smaller, more achievable steps. As children learn each step, they get praise and rewards. The Lovaas Program is used to teach and encourage appropriate behaviour, like language use and social skills. It can also help to reduce the difficult behaviour.

The program ends at the child become part of the school.
