Explanation / Answer

Mary Ainsworth developed the Strange Situation Test to find out the different types of infant attachment using John Bowlby's theory as a base. There were 3 types of infant attachment that emerged from the study.

Secure- infant uses caregiver as secure base and is content that his needs will be met.

Avoidant -behaves emotionally distant, shows no signs of distrss in mother' s absence.

Ambivalent - infant feels anxious as caregiver's behavior is not consistent. The infant is not sure if his needs will be met.

and later a fourth type

Disorganized- The infant feels frightened and confused as the caregiver sometimes behaves as the source of fear.Behaviour is passive and disassociated.

Johnson.et.al in their 2007 study of tge attachment patterns found that

Securely attached infants expect other infants to seek comfort from caregivers and expected caregivers to provide comfort as they have always received responsive caregiving from own caregivers and show surprise when the caregiver does not respond to an infant.Their attachment pattern also predicts their future coping mechanism when in distress.
