Question

Answer the following questions in your own words and between approximately (75-125 words).

1.What is the difference between a theory and a hypothesis?

2.Explain the difference between a mediator variable and a moderator variable. Which of the two is more commonly seen in resilience research and why?

3.You decide that a good measure of sociability in toddlers is to measure how many times toddlers interact with one another. However, you notice that some of these interactions, such as taking away toys or hitting, are antisocial, not prosocial. Is there a problem with reliability or with validity? Support your answer.

Explanation / Answer

1. After conducting experiments, a theory is its conclusion. A hypothesis is an idea about what is going to happen based on which experiments are conducted i.e. a testable explanation of a situation.

2. Mediator variable explains the relationship between the independent variable and the dependent variable. The objective of a mediator variable is to explain that independent variable does not directly influence the dependent variable but rather indirectly through a mediator variable.

A third party variable i.e. the moderator variable modifies the relationship between an independent variable and a dependent variable. It thus measures the strength of the relationship between the independent and dependent variable.

3. There is a problem with validity as it refers to how well the test what it is purported to measure the sociability.
