Explanation / Answer

Linguistics is the scientific study of human language, which involves analyzing language form, meaning, and language context. Phonology is a branch of Linguistics which analyses the systematic organization of sounds in language. Morphology is the inquiry into how words are formed and their relationship to other words in the same language. the former relies on sounds and the latter on form or structure and corresponding relations to other words.

Phonology would be concerned with how an alphabet placed in a word will be pronounced, example the word pot will use a 'ph' sound (aspirated) , while the word spot will be said with a 'p' sound (not aspirated). It also studies how the word 'write'and 'rite, although having different forms, will be sounded in a similar manner.

Morphology will assess the structure of words, like stems, root words, also prefixes and suffixes. The applications of the same are too broad for this answer. Simple examples would include, the opposite meaning of words with and without a prefix, like Independent and Dependent. Also, how Depression is different from depression, with a capital D being the only difference.

Phonology and morphology are important aids in understanding and distinguishing cultures, more because language is one of the distinctive components of a culture that separates one from another.

In the Hindi or Portuguese or Japanese and all other languages, so many words and pronunciations exist which are non-existent in the English Language, thus making it very difficult for a bilingual to accurately pick up a second language if it is completely different from one's mother tongue. this is an application of Phonetics in understanding cultures.

In morphology, translations among different languages become problematic if certain rules of structuring words don't exist in the language in which it has to be translated. The meaning drastically changes in literal translations. This is the reason google translate might come up with a ridiculous and completely unrelated translation of words.

Studying Phonology and Morphology across languages could give an insight into the basic orientation of the people who use it. Some languages sound very lyrical or in a sing-song sound, and others are very monotonous. Language reveals the differences in logical strategies people use in decoding verbal information. Also, it reveals historically how much importance to the complexity of language a culture has spent.
