Question

Alterations in blood levels of Na and K have profound effects on the electrical properties of cells. Because high blood levels of aldosterone cause retention of Na and secretion of K, predict and explain The effect of high aldosterone levels on nerve and muscle function. Also because low blood levels of aldosterone cause low blood levels of Na ad elevated of K, predict the effects of low aldosterone level on Nerve and muscle function. Explanation / Answer

Hyperaldosteronism can cause fluid retention and high blood pressure, low potassium levels and an abnormal increase in blood volume because of the way the hormone affects the body. It's also possible to have low levels of aldosterone. Primary adrenal insufficiency, a disease that causes a general loss of adrenal function, can be a cause.

In hyperaldosteronism, overproduction of aldosterone leads to fluid retention and increased blood pressure, weakness, and, rarely, periods of paralysis.

High aldosterone levels can cause high blood pressure and low potassium levels. Low potassium levels may cause weakness, tingling, muscle spasms, and periods of temporary paralysis.

Deficiencies of aldosterone are much less appreciated than deficiencies of cortisol, and lead to low blood pressure and high pulse, especially on standing, the desire to eat salt (salt-craving), dizziness or lightheadedness on standing, and palpitations. Severe cases may lead to high potassium and low sodium in blood tests.

Many patients with symptoms of fatigue and often salt-craving, “cognitive fuzziness”, dizziness or lightheadedness on standing, or palpitations have low blood levels of aldosterone. The connection between low aldosterone levels and fatigue is as follows: with low aldosterone, the kidney loses salt, leading to low blood volume. This coupled with the idea that the leg veins don’t constrict properly, leads to lower blood volume to the brain and fatigue and other symptoms.
