Eccrine or merocrine glands are tubular coiled glands in dermis that produce sweat mostly composed of water, few salts, antibiotic, traces of metabolic waste and dermicidin (a microbicide). They have an important function of thermoregulation, where they excrete waste by sweat. They are innervated by the sympathetic cholinergic neurons that are controlled by a regulatory center in the hypothalamus. They are present all over the body but concentrated on hands, feet, and forehead. They have myoepithelial cells, which are contractile cells that help in secretion of sweat by the secretory epithelial cells. They are a type of sweat glands. They secrete sweat directly on surface of cell via ducts.

Apocrine glands, present in deep in dermis and sometimes hypodermis, produce sweat made up of fatty substances. These glands secrete sweat through the hair follicle to release it in the skin.

They are present over entire body in infancy but are concentrated in armpits and genital area in adults. They produce odor in sweat due to breakdown of fatty acids by the bacteria. Apocrine glands produce scented pheromones after puberty that attracts the opposite sex. Hormonal stimuli are required to activate these glands after puberty. They are stimulated by sexual excitement and stress due to secretion of adrenalin. Similar to merocrine glands, the myoepithelial cells contract and allow secretion from glands.
