Question
Create an identification tool for the White Blood Cells based on presence or absence of distinctive cytoplasmic granules, relative size and nuclear morphology 9. What is Total Count [TC) and Differential Count (DC]? Describe the diagnostic significance to hema- tological profile with examples like what is meant by an increase or decrease of a WBC type? Which WBC type will increase or decrease during an allergic reaction? Whicht / decrease during parasitic infections? Bacterial infections? Viral infections?Explanation / Answer
8) White blood cells are broadly classified into granulocytes and agranulocytes. Granulocytes contain granules in their cytoplasm and include eosinophils, basophils and neutrophils. Agranulocytes does not have granules in their cytoplasm and include monocytes and lymphocytes.
Eosinophils - their size ranges from 12-17 micrometer in diameter. The cytoplasm is acidic and stain bright red. The nucleus contains only 2 lobes.
Basophils - They are 14-16 micrometer in diameter, contain lots of deep blue staining granules and a bilobed nucleus. The granules contain heparin, histamine and serotonin. prostaglandins and leukotrienes.
Neutrophils - they are 12-14 micrometer in diameter. They contain single nucleus which is multilobed.
Monocytes - these are the largest type of white blood cells, and can be up to 20 micrometer in diameter. They have a large eccentrically placed nucleus, which is kidney bean shaped.
Lymphocytes - they are small cells (6-9 micrometer in diameter). They have small spherical nucleus
