4) Epidural anaesthesia is performed by injecting anesthetic drug in a hollow needle in the epidural space of spinal cord. Spinal anaesthesia is performed by a much smaller needle and the drug is injected directly into the subarachnoid space. The dose of spinal anaesthesia is much lower than the epidural anaesthesia. So, when epidural anaesthetic drug is accidentally given in subarachnoid space, severe complications of spinal anaesthesia occurs. This include headache, hypotension, bradycardia and decrease in rate and depth of respiration.
