Question

the following statements concerning the characteristics of different types of muscle fibers is INCORRECT? a. The higher the ATPase activity, the faster the speed of contraction. b. Muscles that have high glycolytic capacity and large glycogen stores are mor c. Muscles with high ATP-synthesizing ability are more resistant to fatigue. d. Oxidative types of muscie fibers contain myoglobin. e. Muscle fibers containing large amounts of myoglobin have a dark red color ir resistant to fatigue. comparison to the paler fibers, which have little myoglobin.

Explanation / Answer

The correct option is b.

The higher the ATPase activity, the faster the speed of contraction. Contraction of muscles require energy and the energy is available in the form of ATP which need to be hydrolyze to supply energy. Hence statement a is correct

Muscles having low glycolytic capacity are more resistant to fatigue. The end product of glycolytic pathway is pyruvate which may convert into lactic acid in the absence of oxygen. Lactic acid causes fatigueness. Hence statement b is incorrect.

Muscles having high ATP synthesizing ability are more resistant to fatigue. If muscles have high ATP synthesizing capacity, pyruvate (end product of glycolysis) easily goes to next step for ATP production and hence pyruvate molecule is no longer available for lactic acid production. Hence statement c is correct.

Oxidative type of muscle fibers contain myoglobin and hence statement d is also correct.

Large amount of myoglobin produces dark red colour due to red colour of myoglobin. Hence statement e is correct.
