Question
The following statement is similar to those you might see on exams. Write a paragraph of 3-5 sentences describing 1) whether the statement is correct or incorrect and 2) the reasoning for your answer. Your answer should demonstrate your understanding of the physiological concepts underlying the statement and be written professionally. Increasing parasympathetic stimulation on the cardiovascular system will not affect MAP because the parasympathetic nervous system does not influence vascular tone.
Explanation / Answer
The given statement is false.
Parasympathetic nervous system has a role to play in actions of the heart and mean arterial pressure. Muscarinic M2 receptors present on the heart is the site of action of acetylcholine (the parasympathetic neurotransmitter). Parasympathetic innervation leads to the following effects :
Negative chronotropy ( decreased heart rate )
Negative inotropy ( decreased volume of contraction )
Negative dromotropy (decrease in force of contraction)
Therefore we see there is relaxing effect on the musculature of the heart and decrease in vascular tone. This leads to decrease in mean arterial pressure .
