Question
The concept of a ‘brain center’ is rooted in the belief that there are parts of the brain which have a crucial relation to the expression of a behavior. So, people may talk about a brain center for friendliness, a brain center for sex, a brain center for math and a brain center for greed etc. The relation between the part of the brain and the behavior is said to be so crucial that if you remove that brain center, you remove the motivation and the ability to express that behavior. It would then follow that if you remove the center for sex, you would stop sexual behaviors in that individual. No other part of that individual's anatomy would be as crucially important to sexual behaviors as the brain center for sex (or, so states the 'brain center' notion).
Let’s say that you have done the experiment where you remove the VMH (ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus) and you have stopped female sexual behaviors (copulatory behaviors). Please do a 'critical thinking' (logical) analysis of your experiment within the context of the chapter 5 pages you reviewed (see above). Have you confirmed the ‘brain center’ notion or not? Have you provided solid proof that the VMH stands alone as the brain center for female sexual behaviors? Or, could there be a whole array of brain nuclei with functions which must be integrated into a coordinated expression of female sexual behaviors?
Explanation / Answer
The brain center notion is confirmed as it depends on the removal of center of specific which stops the sexual behaviour.
The VMH considers the sexual differences in morphology, neuro chemistry and neural circuitary. In females, the mechanisms of ovarian harmones modulate VMH function to promote lordosis. The VMH is an important neural locus for the control of female typical behaviour and exogenous estrogen stimulates a strong increase in progestrone receptor in the VMH of adult females and hence VMH stands as the brain center for female sexual behaviours.
There might be some specific differences in estradiol receptor expression in the developing brain but these may be generally small in magnitude which are restricted to specific sub regions on the basis of sex differences in brain development. Finally, it is found that there will be a coordinated expression of female sexual behaviours due to several functions of brain nuclei.
