Question
2. Practice Short Answer Question: Briefly describe the experimental evidence for rapid adaptation' in the brain's motor map after lesion or silencing of motor nerves (e.g. Fig 37-17). In your answer be sure to describe: (1) What specifically was done to test for rearrangements of the motor map (2) How these procedures impacted the motor map, and (3) The neuronal circuit hypothesized to underlie these rearrangements. LO: Briefly describe how somatotopic motor maps rapidly 'adapt' to damage and the neuronal circuit thought to underlie these changes.Explanation / Answer
1.To test for rearrangements of the motor map, voltage sensitive dye and functional MRI tests are done specifically.
2.The precentral gyrus is the primary motor cortex and many descending motor fibers originate here to descend through the internal capsule ,the cerebral peduncles and pyramids. These cells send processes out over three seperate tracks where somatotopic map of motor functions occurs.
3.Neuronal circuits operates in various functions and it is conceivable that highly coordinated neuronal activities from large populations of neurons arise during these processes.
The somatotopic motor maps finds pathways for movement to occur in the motor cortex doesnot activate the muscle directly but causes decresed motor neuron activity. So there is a possibility that remapping in motor cortex can come from changes in brain stem and spinal cord.
